5273km - 4967km to go
Hello Everyone,
In my last post, I neglected to share the significance of the 5,273 kilometers I'll be riding. This number nearly mirrors the year of my birth, 52, and my age, 73. If all goes well, I'll be pedaling the entire 5,273 kilometers. The countdown will be at the top of each post.
I was determined to capture the start of my journey with a photo in front of the Santa Maria di Leuca sign. I found this sign on the way or. However, leaving Santa Maria di Leuca proved challenging due to strong winds. Normally, all it takes to snap a photo is shouting 'smile' at my phone, but with the high winds, I found myself running back and forth, struggling to time it right. After numerous attempts, I captured quite a few shots. Which photo do you think stands out?
I've now had three rides since leaving Santa Maria di Leuca with big winds to my back and a few dogs nipping at my heels. It's been a great three days of cycling through truly Trulli rural terrain. The towns starting with Cisternino, Locorotondo, then Alberobello are spotted Trulli. From Wikipedia
“ There are many theories behind the origin of the design. One of the more popular theories is that due to high taxation on property, the people of Apulia built dry stone wallconstructions so that they could be dismantled quickly when tax inspectors were in the area.”
Here is an unedited video of todays ride going quickly down the country side
One of the most remarkable aspects of traveling is the people you encounter along the way. In my last post, I forgot to mention the first night out for dinner in Lecce. At dinner I met Wendy and Paul, a fun couple from Scotland. Their accents gave them away as tourists from the UK. We hit it off instantly, sharing stories and laughter. By the end of the meal, they had extended a warm invitation for us to stay at their home on our way north through Scotland. Such genuine kindness is what makes traveling so special, and we're definitely taking them up on their offer!
And now, I'm bringing back a favorite video of mine. A video featuring my wife and me on a previous cycling tour through this region with some unforgettable moments. Whether you've seen it before or not, it's sure to bring a smile to your face. And since Wendy and Paul have not met Devon , well now you can.
I am really enjoying making this blog for you and for my memories but I need your input! What are you interested in? I aim to please. Morning routines, thoughts while cycling, what happens when I arrive somewhere, food pics, or what's under my bum (my beloved cycle). No subjects are off the table. What's on your mind? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's make this journey ours!
Thanks for tuning in,
Jim
